DO: Make sure you’ve prepared everything first

When you color your hair at home, it’s definitely best to do it at a time when you’re not expecting to be disturbed! This should be when you’re alone in the house and don’t have to run any errands for a few hours, for example. Try to wear an old t-shirt and an old towel draped over your neck to prevent dye from potentially ruining clothing.

Make sure you have everything you need before you begin to dye your hair at home

Another great tip for how to color your hair at home is to rub Vaseline at the top of your forehead, your ears, and at the back of your neck. This will stop dye from staining your skin. You can wash dye off your skin, but it can be a struggle, so better to prevent it in the first place! Always use the gloves that come in any hair dye pack and section your hair into four segments to make the coloring easier.

DON’T: Ignore the instructions in the booklet

It’s always recommended to dye hair ideally after you haven’t washed it for one day. This is because color is absorbed better on hair that isn’t freshly washed, as the hair’s natural oils stop the dye from damaging the scalp. Also, your hair should be dry when you color your hair at home. Follow the directions for how long the dye should be left in your hair, as you definitely don’t want to leave it on for longer than necessary. DO: Consider semi-permanent color

Temporary hair color is a great way to try out different colors before settling on one you really like. Dye your hair at home to avoid expensive salon treatments, but give your hair a few months rest in-between different colors. This type of dye lasts roughly six weeks, or around nine shampoo washes if you’re careful. Remember to use shampoo for colored hair to make the shade last longer!

DON’T: Color hair at home that’s already damaged

If you feel like your hair is already a bit unhealthy, frayed, or full of split ends, then cut your hair first first and use a hair mask a week before dyeing. This will help your hair stay strong and give the strands the nutrients they need before dyeing. Otherwise, damaged hair doesn’t absorb color so well and the dye might result in further dryness, breakage, or different color results. Those wanting to cover gray hair should especially be aware of this.

DO: Keep within two color shades

This is one of the golden rules when it comes to learning how to dye your hair at home. Stay within two shades of your natural hair color for the best, natural results. Of course, if you’re going for pink or blue or green then the rule is already out the window, but try to keep within two shades for natural brunettes, redheads, blondes, etc.
