Holiday Hair Trend Report: Get Your Red White and Blue On

July 4th Hair

Accessorize your summer rompers and maxi dresses this Independence Day with a colorful hair trend that professes your patriotism. Although it’s not a new trend, hair chalking isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and the Fourth of July is the perfect time to have fun with it by adding a touch of red and blue to your tresses. Celebrity hairstylist Richard Collins has chalked some of the most famous heads of hair in Hollywood and says that this is a great way to temporarily add color without commitment. He says hair chalk creates a very similar look to dye and can be found at most beauty supply stores. Below, Collins offers his expert tips and tricks for an at-home hair chalking, along with some very important advice for before and after.

  • It’s important to prep before you begin chalking. Arm yourself with a pair of rubber gloves, an old tee that you don’t mind getting color on, and something to lay down on the floor to catch the chalk dust that falls off. Start by spraying a one-inch section of your hair with water. You don't need to soak the entire strand, just go as high up as you want the color to be. Twist (Collins says the texture from twisting makes the chalk release more pigment) and color your hair moving upward. Continue this process, alternating between the red and blue chalk until you have placed all your highlights where you want them. Allow your hair to air dry naturally. Once your hair is completely dry, set the color in your hair by using your curling or flat iron to go over each colored strand.

When you’re ready to shampoo, keep in mind that your hair care after chalking is especially important, as Collins says it can deplete your hair of its natural moisture. He recommends using Schwarzkopf essence ULTIME Omega Repair and Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner to replenish your hair’s moisture. He also says a deep conditioning treatment like Schwarzkopf essence ULTIME Omega Repair and Moisture Supreme Repair Treatment is a must. Most importantly, Collins advises against chalking your hair too often. Chalking can suck up a lot of natural moisture that you need in the ends of your hair to keep them from looking dry and brittle.

Rock your red and blue locks at this year’s Fourth of July celebrations to show off your patriotic pride while trying out the ever-popular hair chalking trend. It’s a great way to test out and play around with bold hair colors, and what better time than a holiday to get creative with your look?
