  • Azerbaijan wins the Eurovision Song Contest

For a long time they were considered to be hot favourites – and then they actually managed to win: Ell/Nikki from Azerbaijan have taken the Eurovision Song Contest crown from Lena. Italy caused the sensation of the evening, while fire and confetti really got the audience going.

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest motto "Feel your heart beat!" describes the last minutes of the show very well. During the announcement of the points by the various countries, many artists exchanged the lead a number of times, and it only became clear quite late that the top favourite of the evening, Azerbaijan, was going to win. In the end, however, there was no doubt. With a total of 221 points the country collected its first ever victory!

The surprise of the evening was provided by the Italian Raphael Gualazzis. His jazz number was so popular that he made it to second place with 189 points. Sweden was also a bit of a dark horse before the final. Eric Saade surprised everyone by coming third with 185 points. Defending champion Lena was more than happy with tenth place: "We think it was a great performance. Now we’re going to party our heads off", said the singer to the broadcaster ARD.

The optical spectacle of this excellent show was provided primarily by the enormous LED screen, which was more than 1,000 square metres in size, and could deliver anything and everything. From the rising sun to a colourful sea of flowers and even a giant globe, every visual effect was fantastically eye-catching. Fire fountains and confetti rain created real “Wow!” moments and goosebumps, while the sheer excitement of the finale, right up to the last minute, made the Eurovision Song Contest into exactly what it was supposed to be: the greatest entertainment spectacle in 2011!
